Solve measurement problems involving area

In the first activity in this unit, students draw around their hands and cut out the shape in order to use it as a form of measurement. They then estimate how many 'hands' will fit across their desks, the teacher's desk, a doorway and a whiteboard, before checking it with their 'measure'. The same exercise is repeated using a foot. Activity 2 requires students to work out the area of shaded shapes on grids, before drawing their own shapes based on given area measurements.
